TWU Receives “Commitment
to Student Success Award”
12/17/04
DENTON —
Texas Woman’s University has received the Commitment
to Student Success Award from the Council for the Management
of Educational Finance and the Texas Guaranteed Student Loan
Corp. in recognition of the university’s exemplary student
loan management.
To qualify for
the award, TWU had to post a Federal Family Education Loan
Program (FFELP) default rate below the 7.58 percent average
for public doctoral/research universities-intensive. TWU’s
default rate of 3.2 percent is not only below that sector
average, but also below the overall state average of 6.4 percent
and the national average of 5.2 percent.
This fall, 5,259
TWU students received FFELP loans totaling $42.9 million.
TWU maintains a
low default rate by working with students to ensure they don’t
borrow more than they need and through debt management counseling,
said Governor Jackson, TWU director of financial aid.
“Before a
TWU student begins the loan process, we help them exhaust
all other financial aid opportunities — scholarships,
grants, work/study programs,” Jackson said. “This
way, they don’t borrow more than they need, which helps
keep them out of trouble. We also discuss with students the
importance of fulfilling their financial obligations.”
The Texas Guaranteed
Student Loan Corp. is a public, non-profit organization that
administers the FFELP. The Council for the Management of Educational
Finance provides leadership in default prevention and debt
management throughout the higher education community.
