Open House Aug.

Open House Aug. 22 for TWU Arts and Sciences
Building
8/7/02
DENTON The community is invited to a reception marking
the completion of renovations to the Arts and Sciences Building
(ASB) at Texas Woman's University. The reception will be Aug. 22
from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in ASB, located near the intersection of
Oakland Avenue and Third Street.
Original construction on ASB began in 1958. The $4.5 million
renovation project began two years ago to update the 48,163
square-foot building and make it more suited for 21st
century teaching methods.
The renovated space includes three computer labs, a lecture
room, three seminar rooms and 13 classrooms. The classrooms are
wired to accommodate high-tech instructional equipment, which can
be controlled from each classroom's lecture station.
"I'm excited about the incorporation of instructional
technology into the classrooms. Before, you had to roll equipment
in and out for each class," said Dr. Patricia Hamilton,
professor of nursing, who sat on the committee that made
renovation recommendations.
"There was a lot of discussion about current and future
use and projecting future use of space. We spent six months with
the architect discussing needs. And everyone (departments) that
uses the building had input."
Along with classroom facilities, ASB also is home to the
Center for Nonlinear Research and the College of Nursing, which
averages 1,400 students and is the largest nursing program in the
state of Texas. TWU's nursing program graduates 13 percent of
Texas' new nurses annually, and its students have a first-time
pass rate of 96.9 percent on the nursing licensure exam. Other
amenities in ASB include a research and reading room for graduate
students and a student lounge with study space.
Randall Scott Architects of Dallas is the architect of record
for the project. Constructors Inc. of Dallas is the general
contractor.
