TWU launches mobile site
The mobile website features access to information on TWU programs, admissions, financial aid and scholarships, the TWU library and bookstore, campus directory, campus maps, TWU events calendar, webmail and Blackboard, an Internet-based service used by TWU to deliver online courses.
The TWU Web Team developed the mobile site over a period of four months. The site’s content is based on responses from more than 1,000 current and prospective students (both undergraduate and graduate) surveyed by the web team and marketing research students of Dr. Pushkala Raman, associate professor of marketing in the TWU School of Management.
Results showed that 73 percent of current and prospective students use a mobile device to access the TWU website. Students listed the ability to find textbooks and access Blackboard, the Pioneer Portal and email among the features they most wanted on a mobile site.
The launch of TWU Mobile is part of a three-phase project to improve access to the university’s website. Because mobile websites are more accessible by a wider variety of devices, the TWU Team chose to begin with this option. Mobile apps, to be made available through the iTunes® App Store and the Android™Market, will be launched by the end of the spring 2012 semester.
Phase three of the project involves making the full TWU website more mobile-friendly.
“Students have been interested in finding a mobile website like this,” said Branee Robinson, a nursing junior from Dallas. “They’ve been frustrated at having to log in on multiple pages when checking their email. This definitely is more convenient.”
Candice Haley, a senior government major from Dallas, said the new mobile website makes information easier to access.
Viewing the TWU website on her phone previously had required visiting several pages to get to the information she wanted, Ms. Haley said. With the new mobile website, “everything is right at your fingertips. I love it.”
