Bachelor's Degree in Interdisciplinary Studies

"Generalist" is the term applied to a teaching certificate that allows the holder to teach all subject areas within a particular grade span. The B.S. in Interdisciplinary Studies offers two single certification Generalist degree plans: Early Childhood - Grade Six and Grade Four - Grade Eight.

EC - 6 Generalist Degree
Students interested in the Early Childhood - Grade 6 Generalist degree plan in the Interdisciplinary Studies major have selected a broad based plan including Texas teacher certification. Their certificate will allow them the option of teaching preschool through the sixth grade in a public school environment.

4 - 8 Generalist Degree
Students interested in the Grade†4 - Grade 8 Generalist degree plan in the Interdisciplinary Studies major have selected a broad based plan including Texas teacher certification. The certificate will allow students the option of teaching any grade level fourth through the eighth grade in a public school environment.

Several dual certification options are available at each level. These allow the holder all the privileges of the Generalist certificate as well as licensure to teach special populations. Plans for EC-Grade†6 include:

EC -†6 ESL Generalist Degree Plan
The program offers an ESL certification plan for teacher candidates pursuing a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Interdisciplinary Studies.

Advantages of ESL certification: (1) Faced with an ever-growing population of English language learners, school districts are looking for more and more ESL teachers every year. (2) You could receive an annual stipend of at least $500 in some school districts. (3) You could teach abroad, in such countries as Mexico, France, Spain, China, and Japan, where there is always a shortage of qualified ESL teachers.†

EC - 6 Bilingual Generalist Degree Plan
The program offers a Bilingual certification plan for teacher candidates pursuing a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Interdisciplinary Studies.

Bilingual Education and ESL focus on the development of competencies related to effective Bilingual and ESL Education in EC-6 and 4-8 classrooms, including emphasis on foundations of Bilingual and ESL Education, second language theories and practices, developing literacy in first and second language acquisition, native language instruction, techniques for assessing academic achievement, and linguistics for educators.

EC -6† Special Education Generalist Degree Plan
Students who successfully complete this degree program and pass the TExES examinations will be considered a highly qualified teacher as required by the Individuals with Disabilities Act 2004 and No Child Left Behind for both general and special education preschool through 6th grade.

4 - 8 ESL Generalist Degree Plan

4 - 8 Bilingual Generalist Degree Plan
The program offers a Bilingual certification plan for teacher candidates pursuing a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Interdisciplinary Studies.

Advantages of Bilingual certification: (1) Your job is secure, as the demand is higher than the supply. (2) You could receive an annual stipend of up to $4,000 in some school districts. (3) There is a wide variety of places to work, such as language schools, private schools, international agencies, and non-profit organizations.

4 - 8 Special Education Generalist Degree Plan
Students who successfully complete this degree program and pass the TExES examinations will be considered a highly qualified teacher as required by the Individuals with Disabilities Act 2004 and No Child Left Behind for both general and special education 4th through 8th grade

4 - 8 English, Language Arts, and Reading Degree
The B. S. In Interdisciplinary Studies also offers a specialized certification in Grade 4 - 8 English Language Arts and Reading.† This plan is for individuals who want to focus their teaching on English and the Language Arts in a middle school setting.

Master's Degrees

Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT)
The Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) is a university-wide degree designed for individuals pursuing initial Texas teacher certification at the graduate level and meets certification standards outlined by the Texas Education Agency (TEA). Academic preparation leading to certification and a masterís degree is offered in grades Early Childhood-Grade 6, Generalist, Bilingual, Special Education†and ESL and Grades 4-8 Generalist, Bilingual, Special Education†and ESL; English Language Arts and Reading; Mathematics, Science,†and Social Studies. Grade 8-12 content areas include: Business Administration; Computer Science; Dance; English Language Arts and Reading; Family and Consumer Sciences; Health Education; History; Mathematics, and Social Studies. All-Level certificates include Art, Music, and Physical Education, Health and Theatre Arts

Master of Education in Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum†(Effective as of August, 2008)
The Master of Education in Teaching, Learning, and Curriculum is for individuals who already hold a Texas teaching certificate and wish to update and expand current knowledge and/or explore options which may lead to new opportunities in the field of education. This 36 hour degree has a 6 semester hour research core, a required core of 12 semester hours that all students take and nine specialization strands from which remaining hours may be taken. Coursework taken from the Bilingual Education, English as a Second Language, and Special Education strands may lead to supplementary certification in those areas.
