Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

Background
The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program was established by Congress in 1986 to honor Senator Barry M. Goldwater, who served his country for 56 years as a soldier and statesman, including 30 years of service in the U.S. Senate. The purpose of the Foundation is to provide a continuing source of highly qualified scientists, mathematicians, and engineers by awarding scholarships to college students who intend to pursue careers in this field.
Purpose
The purpose of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship is: To promote students majoring in math, science, and engineering; to encourage careers in STEM fields.
Eligibility
Candidates must be:
- US Citizens or US Nationals or permanent residents.
- College Juniors and/or Seniors. (Current sophomores may apply as long as they achieve Junior status by the time of the award.)
- Science, math, technology majors who intend to plan a career in research rather than one in private medical practice.
- Candidates must have a minimum of a B average.
Selection Criterion
- Candidate’s field of study and career objectives will be considered, as will the extent to which the candidate has demonstrated the commitment and potential to make a significant contribution to her or his field.
- Financial need is not a criterion for selection.
Award
- Award covers eligible expenses including tuition, fees, books, room, and board up to $7,500 per year.
- Recipients are eligible for one or two years of support.
- 300 awards are distributed each year.
- Four students per institution may be nominated.
Application Information
- Applications will be available by September 1, 2007.
- Completed application packets submitted to TWU Committee by January 4, 2008.
- Completed applications to Goldwater Foundation by February 1, 2008 (approximate date).
