All applicants must meet the general requirements for admission to the Graduate School and submit Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Miller Analogies Test (MAT) scores in order for the ApplyTexas online application to be processed. Please email Laura Bracken at  when you begin the admission process.

Admission to the nursing doctoral degree programs (DNP and PhD) may be awarded on an unconditional or provisional basis.  The criteria for unconditional admission are as follows: 

Academic Requirements

  • Master's degree with a major in nursing from a program accredited by a nationally recognized accrediting body
  • A minimum grade point average (GPA) of 3.5 on prior graduate level course work
  • Scores on either the GRE (Graduate Record Examination) or MAT (Miller Analogies Test)
  • Preferred scores for the GRE are as follows:

                                      Verbal Reasoning        Quantitative Reasoning        Analytical Writing

          Before 2011:                 460                                  500                                           4 

          After 2011:                   142                                  142                                           4

  •  Preferred scores on the MAT are as follows:

           Before October 1, 2004    400

           After October 1, 2004       50

  • All candidates MUST submit either GRE or MAT scores as a part of the admission process
  • Course in research at the graduate level
  • Course in statistics at the graduate level

Professional Requirements

  • Current unencumbered license to practice professional nursing in the United States
  • Certification as an APRN from a nationally recognized nursing certification body that is accredited by the appropriate national standard organization
  • Eligibility to be recognized as an APRN in Texas

Other Requirements 

  • Curriculum vita or resume
  • Two letters of recommendation
  • Letter discussing professional goals

Applicants who do not meet the unconditional criteria, but who have a minimum GPA of 3.0 on prior graduate level course work, may be considered for provisional admission on an individual basis. Factors that will be considered in the admission decision are

  • GPA on graduate level work
  • GRE Verbal and Quantitative scores or MAT score
  • Scholarly activities
  • Professional leadership
  • Work history
