Music Department Entrance and Scholarship Application

How to Audition

  1. Fill out the Music Entrance and Scholarship Audition Application Form (found at the bottom of this page) and submit online. Form must be received by the music department no later than Monday, January 23, 2017 at 5pm for the January audition, Monday, February 20, 2017 at 5pm for the February audition, and Monday, March 20, 2017. The Audition Application Form is posted at the bottom of these instructions. Please fill out the form completely before submitting, as incomplete applications will not be accepted.
  2. Apply to Texas Woman's University Admissions. If you are offered a scholarship, you may not be awarded the scholarship until you have been accepted for admission into the University.
  3. Total performance time will average 7-10 minutes in length.
    • Singers should memorize two contrasting pieces from vocal literature of the classical genre.
    • Instrumentalists should prepare a selection from the standard repertoire for your instrument. Audition may include scales and sight reading.
    • Pianists should perform pieces representing at least two different style periods (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century).
      *An accompanist will be provided, or you may bring your own. No taped accompaniments are allowed.
  4. A letter of recommendation needs to be sent from your current private teacher or ensemble director to: music@twu.edu.
  5. A live audition is preferred, but a high-quality DVD may be sent to Texas Woman's University, P.O. Box 425768, Denton, TX 76204-5768 and marked “Attention: Entrance Audition” OR online links may be emailed to music@twu.edu. Deadline for receipt of audition video is February 15th, 2017.
  6. Placement Evaluations:
    • Transfer and Graduate students:
      • If your performance audition time is before 3:00 p.m., plan to stay approximately 1 hour afterwards for a music theory/sight singing assessment.
      • Students whose audition time is 3:00 p.m. or later are to report for the music theory/sight singing assessment 90 minutes prior to their audition.
    • First Time In College (FTIC) students:
      • If your performance audition time is before 3:00 p.m., plan to stay approximately 30 minutes afterwards for a music theory/sight singing assessment.
      • Students whose audition time is 3:00 p.m. or later are to report for the music theory/sight singing assessment 60 minutes prior to their audition.
