Matt Sawyer is currently a Graduate Teaching Assistant in the Department of Music and Drama at Texas Woman's University. Matt attended the University of North Texas, and while there, he obtained a Bachelors of Music in Jazz Studies and performed with the world-renowned One O'clock Lab Band on alto and tenor saxophones, recording four studio albums and two live albums, Live From Thailand and Live At Blues Alley. He was also a two-time Finalist in the North American Saxophone Alliance Young Artist's Jazz Improvisation Competition, and his group, The Matt Sawyer Orchestra, was selected to perform at the 2006 North Sea Jazz Festival in Rotterdam, Netherlands. His arrangement for his group of John Coltrane's Dear Lord was Downbeat Winner of Best Arrangement the same year.
In addition to being a performer, Matt is an active teacher and clinician in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area for woodwinds and jazz improvisation, and has experience teaching 4th grade through high school in the classroom in both classical and jazz. His professional affiliations include Texas Music Educators Association and the Jazz Education Network. He plans to complete a Masters in Music Education.
