Entering Citations

Please view the RefWorks Export/Import/Manual Entry Instructions page for specific database instructions.

There are three ways citations are added to your RefWorks bibliography. They are either:
  • Exported from the database into RefWorks.
  • Imported into RefWorks. Citations are saved from the database as a .txt file and then imported into RefWorks.
  • Manually entered into RefWorks. Citations for some databases cannot be imported or exported. These citations will have to be entered into RefWorks manually.

Citing Database URLs

When citing a full-text article retrieved from a subscription database, some citation formats require that the "entry point" web address for the database you searched be included, as well as the vendor name. Database URL information is exported into RefWorks in different ways and may need to be edited prior to creating your bibliography.

RefShare

RefShare Fact Sheet [pdf]
RefShare is an add-on module to RefWorks that provides users with a quick and easy way to share research. Users may share RefWorks references with members of their own institution, as well as other RefWorks users.

How It Works:

  • The subscribing institution makes a customizable web page available where users can post their RefWorks folders and databases.
  • Users may easily access the databases and share access to this information with anyone through email.

Write-N-Cite

If you use Microsoft Word 2007 or Windows Vista, you will need to download Write-N-Cite III .

Write-N-Cite is a utility that allows users to run an abbreviated version of RefWorks in their word processor. This version of RefWorks displays Author, Title, and Year Only, with a full view option available if needed.

With Write-N-Cite, you can cite references in a manuscript with the click of a button. The abbreviated version can be set to Always on top so that it stays in place as you are typing your manuscript and generating your bibliography. The utility installs a Write-N-Cite button on your desktop as well as an Add-in to your Word toolbar (Windows users only) and a menu option in Word, under Tools for launching Write-N-Cite.

Starting Write-N-Cite
After you have installed the Write-N-Cite program, open it from within Word by clicking the toolbar icon or by selecting it from the Tools drop down menu. You can also launch the program from the Write-N-Cite icon on your desktop or by clicking on the Start menu and selecting RefWorks from All Programs. If you launch the program from the desktop icon or the Start menu, it automatically opens a copy of Word for you.

You will need the RefWorks Group Code to use Write-N-Cite. The Group Code is RWTWU.

RefGrab-It

Install RefGrab-It  | RefGrab-It Tutorial

RefGrab-It works with your browser to capture bibliographic information from web pages giving you the option to import that data into your RefWorks account.

If an ISBN number, PubMed ID or DOI exist on the web page, RefGrab-It will automatically search various web resources to get supplemental information that may be of interest to you.  RefWorks may also locate RSS feeds related to that web page.

When you use RefGrab-It on a web page, it automatically opens a "temporary results page" in a new window.  You can view the information and additional resources first, then decide if you want to import the data.
