History & Purpose
The University Archive houses decades of history chronicling TWU’s unique standing among Texas colleges and universities. Established in 1901 by the Texas Legislature as the Girls Industrial College, TWU held its first classes in 1903. In 1905, the name was changed to College of Industrial Arts (CIA); in 1934 to Texas State College for Women (TSCW); and in 1957 to Texas Woman’s University.
The University Archives is housed with and administered by the staff of the Woman’s Collection. The collection includes: photographs, clothing and textiles including early university uniforms, artifacts, art work, and a growing oral history project. In addition, university publications include periodicals, yearbooks, literary journals, campus catalogs and histories.
Access & Research
Access is provided by the Woman’s Collection Department during the hours listed below. Portions of university records that are unprocessed are not open for research because of privacy issues, but are generally identified as “Closed to Research” in the Digital Collections. We encourage all researchers to review our growing Digital Collections not only for full text photographs and artifacts, but for descriptive cataloging of items not yet appearing in full text.
The Woman’s Collection staff is available to help researchers Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 pm. Materials housed in the vault are available during staff office hours only. Researchers will find published books and completed oral histories about the university available on open stacks whenever the Library is open.
