TWU through its electric provider, Denton Municipal Electric, purchases 40% “green” or renewable energy from wind power for the Denton Campus. The Wolf Ridge Wind Farm is located northwest of Muenster, Texas, approximately 30 miles from the Denton campus. Seventy five (75) wind turbines generates 1.5 megawatts each. The City of Denton’s methane gas production from its landfill also generates 1.6 megawatts of electricity that is sold to TWU.
The Houston and Dallas campuses have benefited from 15% wind generated energy since July 2008. Facilities Management and Construction continues to negotiate significant renewable energy purchases and implement other environmentally friendly initiatives for campuses that dramatically reduces the University’s carbon footprint.
