You may apply for a scholarship between November 15th and March 15th each year through the STARS Program. Awards will be determined and awardees notified after March 15th for the following fall and spring semesters. Funds will be disbursed prior to each fall term. The amounts awarded vary each year depending on funds available.
Minimum qualifications include being a major in the department and having a cumulative GPA of 3.0. Incomplete applications or GPAs below 3.0 will not be considered.
To apply for a department scholarship, look for the STARS logo which will appear on the department home page as well as the TWU home page and the Financial Aid home page between November 15th and March 15th.
The Department of Family Sciences scholarships are funded by the following sources:
Susie G. Carlisle Endowed Scholarship - Established through the provisions of the last will and testament of Susie G. Carlisle for students majoring in home economics. **
Sarah Lucretia Cowan Endowed Scholarship - The purpose of the scholarship is to provide a stream of income to support a full academic scholarship covering the total cost of tuition and fees for students within the academic area on Home Economics. **
Family Sciences Scholarship - Established by students, staff and faculty of the Family Science department to provide financial assistance to student majoring in Family Sciences.
Ardella R. Helm Endowed Scholarship - This scholarship was established through the provision of the last will and testament of Ardella R. Helm for students who are studying home economics. **
Joan Mansfield Henkhaus Scholarship Endowment - The purpose of the scholarship is to provide a stream of income to support a full academic scholarship covering the total cost of tuition and fees for students within the academic area of Home Economics **
Nell I. Morris Scholarship - The income from this gift will be used by the university for the establishment of scholarships to be awarded to students majoring in home economics. Such scholarships will be awarded to worthy and achieving students, to be selected by the department head based on such standards as may be prescribed. **
Jessie Bateman-Barns Narsutis Endowed Scholarship - Established through the estate of Jessie Bateman-Barns Narsutis for students whose majors are within the Department of Family Sciences.
North Metro Counseling Association Scholarship - The criteria are as follows:
- Meet the minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and the continuing academic performance standards of the College of Professional Education in effect at the time of any award;
- Must maintain either full or part-time enrollment at the University;
- Must be a graduate student in the College of Professional Education;
- Must be a member of the Texas Counseling Association; and
- Preference shall be given to students with financial need.
Jacque E. Ramsey Scholarship Endowment Fund - The purpose of the fund is to provide a stream of income to support scholarship for students whose majors are within the Department of Family Sciences.

Mabel Williams Sowell Endowed Scholarship - Established by Grover E. and Sally M. Murray in honor of her mother for scholarships within the area of home economics.
Ruth Ramey Sweeney Scholarship Endowment - The purpose of the fund is to provide a stream on income to support scholarships for students who are majoring in the counseling program within the Department of Family Sciences.
Dora Tyer Memorial Scholarship - Established by the family and friends of Dora A. Tyer, a former faculty member in Child Development. It provides award to students majoring in Child Development.
NCJW Reba M. Wadel Scholarship - Established by the Greater Dallas Section of the National Council of Jewish Women for graduate students in the Department of Family Sciences.
Claudia G. Williams Endowed Scholarship - Established by friends of Claudia G. Williams, provides scholarships for graduate students eligible for admissions to any graduate program in nutrition and food science, textiles, or human development. **
Veneta Onley Young Endowed Scholarship - Established by colleagues, family and friends of Veneta Onley Young to provide awards to undergraduate students pursuing a degree in home economics education.
** Split three ways with Family Science, Fashion & Textiles, and Nutrition and Food Science, sometimes on an annual, rotating basis.
