Master's Degree Admissions
Applicants to the School of Library and Information Studies must submit two different sets of materials: set one going to the Office of Student Records Processing and set two going to the School of Library and Information Studies. Details of each set are given below. Incomplete applications will not be considered.
1. Applicants must submit the following four items to the Office of Student Records Processing at:
TWU, PO Box 425649, Denton, TX 76204-5649:
- Official transcripts for all previous university work
- Application fee
- Online Graduate School application form (Apply Texas)
- Official standardized test score (GRE, GMAT, LSAT, MCAT or Miller Analogies Test): Master's Program only (These test scores can be waived for applicants holding an acredited master's or doctoral degree in another discipline.)

Note the following:
- The standardized test score has no time limit but only official copies of scores will be considered; contact the Office of Student Records Processing regarding questions on this point.
- The GRE is preferred but the GMAT, LSAT, MCAT or Miller Analogies Test is an acceptable alternative.
- No specific test scores are required; expectations are that successful applicants will generally have scores which fall at or above the median for the national aggregates of their available demographic variables.
- GPAs for the last 60 hours of undergraduate coursework are expected to be at least 3.0. Those who have a 3.0 or higher in a completed post-graduate degree will be considered.
- SLIS follows the University's requirements regarding English language proficiency scores.
2. Applicants must also gather the following materials and submit them to the SLIS ( P.O. Box 425438 , Denton TX 76204-5438 ) in a single, complete mailing:
- 3 letters of recommendation from professional and/or educational connections who can address the applicant's potential for success in graduate school
- a well written, 2-page statement of intent addressing the applicant's professional interest, experience, or expertise in librarianship, information studies, and/or information technology
- a SLIS application form
Please note the following:
- Applicants may also submit a resume if they so choose.
- Applicants are encouraged to use their recommendation letters, statements, and/or resumes to provide evidence of their ability to handle information technology, learn about information technology, develop an understanding of librarianship, and complete graduate-level coursework.
- Only complete applications will be considered.
Ph.D Admissions
- Submit an online application for admission to the TWU Graduate School found at http://www.twu.edu/admissions/apply.htm.
- Submit an application checklist to the Doctoral Program Committee of the School of Library and Information Studies. Attach to this form the following (this information may also be found in the application checklist):
- Autobiographical essay that includes reasons for pursuing the Ph.D. (about 500 words)
- Vita or Resume that includes details and dates for:
- Colleges and universities attended, degrees, certificates
- Professional experience
- Academic and professional honors
- Professional and honorary organizations to which you belong, with information about offices or service roles
- Publications and/or presentations
- Official transcript for all previous university work
- Application fee
- Names and contact information for three references who will send letters directly to the Doctoral Program Committee. These persons’ letters will assess your potential for success in the Ph.D. program.
- Starting with Fall 2008 admissions, all applicants must also submit a GRE or other standard test score.
Non-Degree Seeking Admissions
SLIS admits Library Science non-degree seeking students who meet one of the following two conditions when spaces are available:
1. The applicant already has an MLS degree;
or
2. The applicant is in the process of applying for SLIS degree-seeking admission and must take a SLIS course(s) immediately to meet the requirement of employment or financial aid agency, in which case the applicant must arrange a letter from the employer or financial aid agency on its letterhead with signature to be sent directly to the SLIS office.
Applications for Library Science non-degree seeking admission are reviewed by the SLIS Director.
Timeline for admission are as follows:

Applications must be totally complete and in the SLIS office to be reviewed by the Enrollment Management Committee. Applicants will be notified when their application is complete. Applicants are responsible for keeping their contact information current throughout the application process.
Letters with admission decisions from the Dean of the Graduate School will be mailed by the "response sent" dates noted above to applicants who provided completed, on-time applications. Please allow 14 business days for the response to arrive. In addition, a follow-up letter from the Director of SLIS will be mailed to admitted applicants. Applicants are encouraged to keep copies of these notification letters.
Applications after Initial Deadline:
The Enrollment Management Committee will continue to review applications completed after the initial deadline, and to admit qualified applicants until the limit for a particular semester is reached, then will move the remaining applications to consideration for the next semester. |
