Choosing what we want to do with our lives in terms of our career and profession is a tremendously important decision. If your goals include a career that is challenging and rewarding and a profession that will provide you with opportunities to make a difference in your community and your world, you may be interested in exploring the options available in TWU’s College of Professional Education. Texas Woman’s University has a long and very successful history of preparing outstanding educators and human service professionals who are working in schools and communities throughout the world.
In the Department of Family Sciences you will find undergraduate and graduate programs in Counseling & Development, Early Childhood Development & Education, Family and Consumer Sciences, Family Studies, and Family Therapy. If you are interested in teaching as a career the Department of Teacher Education can prepare you to teach elementary (EC-6), middle school (4-8), special education, ESL and bilingual education. We also work with other departments across the university to prepare teachers in high school (7-12) subject areas and all-level teaching fields.
The Department of Reading offers graduate programs in reading and literacy and works with the Department of Teacher Education in preparing elementary and middle school teachers at the undergraduate level. It is also home to one of only twenty-two Reading Recovery University Training Centers in the United States. If you are interested in librarianship for school, public, academic, and special libraries you should visit COPE’s School of Library and Information Studies. At the Office of Student Support Services you will find information and assistance on degree plans, academic advising, testing and certification for educator preparation. The Professional Development Center coordinates practicum, internships and student teaching experiences.
