On October 5th TWU hosted a Regional Core Curriculum Symposium to discuss implementation of the new Texas Core Curriculum. The Symposium brought together 86 representatives from TWU and colleges and universities throughout the region; including  Collin College, Brookhaven College, Cedar Valley College, Eastfield College, El Centro College, Richland College, Tarrant County College, Texas A&M Commerce, University of North Texas, and University of Texas-Dallas.  Dr. Robert Neely welcomed the symposium’s honored guests, Dr. Catherine Parsoneault, Senior Program Director, THECB and Dr. Lorraine Phillips, Director of Institutional Assessment, Texas A&M University.  In her presentation,  Dr. Parsoneault provided perspectives on the rationale and implementation of the new guidelines.   Dr. Phillips followed with a discussion of assessment of the six core objectives and shared the work of AAC&U's Liberal Education and America’s Promise (LEAP), a national organization which provides foundation support in areas of learning and assessment.  Afternoon roundtable discussions enabled attendees to share concerns and solutions.

The core review process presents an opportunity to all Texas colleges and universities to build a comprehensive foundational curriculum aligned with the mission of the institution and the needs of its students.  At TWU, the process will incorporate input and support  from faculty, staff and students throughout the TWU community, under the guidance and direction of the Undergraduate Council.  The revised TWU core will be submitted to the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board for approval in fall 2013 and will be in effect for all incoming students in fall 2014.
