Symposium Overview
The symposium topics include the interactions of various aspects of systemic health and periodontal disease.

The first part of the symposium includes a discussion about:

  • Risk Factors / Genetic Susceptibility
  • Diabetes
  • HIV/AIDS
  • Cardiovascular Disease
  • Drug-Induced Gingival Overgrowth
  • Pregnancy / Low Birth Weight / Osteoporosis
  • Smoking

The second part of the symposium will discuss:

  • Full mouth versus quadrant scaling
  • Treatment planning
  • Use of antibiotics
  • “Perio Jeopardy” with selected cases

Symposium Objectives

  • To understand the risk factors of periodontal disease.
  • To understand the interrelationship of various systemic diseases and conditions with periodontal disease.
  • To understand the benefit or implication of periodontal treatment with these systemic diseases or conditions. 

Keynote Speaker
Dr. John Rapley, Chairman for the Department of Periodontics at UMKC School of Dentistry, Kansas City, Missouri.
Dr. John W. Rapley graduated from UMKC in Dec. 1973, and completed a GPR Residency at Malcolm Grow Medical Center, Andrews AFB, Maryland in July 1975.  He practiced General Dentistry in the USAF for five years, and completed his periodontal residency in 1981 at Wilford Hall USAF Medical Center, San Antonio, Texas, with an additional Masters of Science degree from the University of Texas at Houston.  Dr. Rapley practiced periodontics and taught in the USAF periodontal residency until his retirement from the USAF in 1990.  He became the Director of Graduate Periodontics at UMKC in 1990 and held that position until 2000. He has been the Chairman of Periodontics at UMKC and Director of Undergraduate Periodontics since 1998.  He has published 49 articles and 15 textbook chapters, and given over 144 presentations in the United States and Europe.

The early bird registration fee (until August 28, 2009):

Assistant  $119
Dentist $139
After August 28, add $25 to the fee.

Cancellation/Refund Policy
Registrants who find it necessary to cancel will receive a refund, less a $20 processing fee. To receive a refund, you must submit written notification seven days prior to the event start date (fax 940.898.3416). Substitutions may be made at any time. Refunds will not be issued once the event begins. The Office of Lifelong Learning reserves the right to cancel this event if minimum enrollment is not met or other events out of our control take place. In doing so, Texas Woman’s University’s liability is limited to the registration fee.
