TWU Institute for Health Sciences - Houston
As a member institution, TWU provides access to the Houston Academy of Medicine- Texas Medical Center (TMC) library for faculty, staff, and students studying business, health care administration, nursing, nutrition, occupational therapy, physical therapy, library science and other subjects at the Houston center. The TMC library is a world class medical library with over 357,000 books, electronic books, electronic and bound journals plus web pages that provide links to health science resources and services. The TMC library provides its member institutions remote access to 9,101 electronic journals and 172 databases, access to individual consultations with professional medical librarians and library orientations for faculty and students.
The Academic Resource Center (ARC), located in room 4132, behind the Mega Computer Lab, is Texas Woman's University (TWU) Houston knowledge center. The ARC has a largely virtual (electronic) library supported by Texas Woman's University plus the College of Health Sciences, College of Nursing, and other Houston collections of books and media materials for study or check out. The TWU Libraries catalog lists these electronic resources and most materials on the shelves. If your Professor has placed items on reserve for your semester study, you can view or check them out here, according to your Professor's direction. We usually do not have a copy of your current textbook. Medical librarian Marilyn Goff, MLS, AHIP provides information services including information retrieval for teaching, research needs, instruction sessions for Houston faculty, staff, and students to facilitate access to full text and other web resources. Free classes for TWU faculty, staff and students are listed on the campus Calendar of Events and at the TWU Libraries web sites.
Free use of books, media, electric stapler, hole puncher, pencil sharpener, paper cutter, headphones, and media preview/study areas are available plus a photocopier at a nominal charge. Two media viewing rooms (first come, first served; no reservations) have room for 5-8 people and have playback equipment for video, DVD, audio, three Printer E-connected PC'sand a scanner for student use. The ARC provides library services of workshops, in-classroom, and one-on-one training on library internet and research and resources to all TWU Houston students, faculty and staff. In addition, the ARC staff assists Houston faculty and students to obtain their TMC library card, guides faculty, staff and students to obtaining a TexShare card that allows direct borrowing privileges at hundreds of Texas public and other research libraries including Rice University, the University of Houston, and others.
