Houston Update

TWU Houston

While the TWU-Houston campus building stands undamaged in the aftermath of hurricane Ike, the lives of students, faculty and staff have certainly been impacted and likewise the academic life of the university.

TWU-Houston cancelled classes and closed at noon on Thursday, September 11, in anticipation of the storm.   After landfall and the following devastation, TWU-Houston remained closed throughout the week of September 15.   On Wednesday of that week, the building was opened during the day time to house TWU students, faculty and staff who were displaced by the storm so that they could use the showers in the fitness center, utilize  the computers to notify family and friends of their status, check e-mail, charge cell phones and access bottled water and non-perishable foods that were shipped from the Denton campus.  Some 30 -50 people used the facilities each day.

When classes resumed on September 22, most students were back in class and only a few faculty and staff could not report for work.  A few students, especially those working and attending part time, were so badly impacted either at home or their place of work that they were forced to withdraw for the semester.  University officials and faculty have pledged to work with each student to adjust  academic needs as the city of Houston and its residents, including TWU students, continue to recover from Ike.
