TOEFL Score Requirements

  • Internet-Based Test (IBT):
    • 79 and above for unconditional admission
  • Paper-Based Test (PBT):
    • 550 and above for unconditional admission
  • Computer-Based Test (CBT):
    • 213 and above for unconditional admission

TOEFL Exemptions

Undergraduate Exemptions

  • Students who are citizens of Anguilla, Antigua, Australia, The Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Bermuda, British Virgin Islands, Canada (Except Quebec), Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, British Guyana, Ireland, Jamaica, Liberia, Montserrat, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis, St Lucia, Sierra Leone, South Africa, St Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos Islands, United Kingdom (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland Wales) Proof of citizenship (passport, visa, birth certificate or permanent resident card) must be provided. Note:  Permanent Residency alone does not qualify for an exemption. If you are not a citizen of one of the countries listed above, you cannot claim this exception.
  • Students who have earned a diploma from an accredited United States High School or a Bachelor's degree from an accredited United States college or university
  • Students who have completed English 1013 or 1023 (Freshman Composition) with a grade of "C" or better
  • Students who have completed Level 6 at the University of North Texas' Intensive English Language Institute o the University of Houston Language and Culture Center (LCC) Intensive English Program.
  • Students who have successfully completed Texas International Education Consortium (TIEPs) advanced-level program as defined in the information provided by TIEP and who are seeking admission to our campus
  • Students who have the following test and scores:

  • Students who have earned a Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited United States college or university.
  • Students who have completed Level 6 at the University of North Texas' Intensive English Language Institute o the University of Houston Language and Culture Center (LCC) Intensive English Program.
  • Students who have the following test and scores:  IELTS—Overall band score of 6.5 or higher; MELAB—overall score of 80 (you must attach official test scores to qualify for this exemption).

  • A verbal score of 500 or above (prior to 8/1/11) or 153 or above (after 8/1/11) on the Graduate Record Examination (GRE), or a GMAT equivalent to 50th percentile. These scores must be presented by the official deadlines published.

  • Students who have successfully completed Texas International Education Consortium (TIEPs) advanced-level program as defined in the information provided by TIEP and who are seeking admission to our campus.

If you qualify for a TOEFL exemption complete the TOEFL Exemption Form  and forward to the Office of International Education.
