‘A’lternative ‘P’reparation for ‘L'ibrarians in ‘U’rban ‘S’chools - ‘A-PLUS’

A Collaborative project between TWU's School of Library and Information Studies And the Dallas Independent School District's (DISD) Alternative Certification Program

A-PLUS Success at a glance

  • Total 54 librarian interns accepted into the program
  • 47 A-PLUS librarians currently working in the Dallas ISD
  • 39 librarians fully certified as a result of A-PLUS program
  • 12 additional completing certification requirements

On March 14, 2008, we requested, and were granted, a no-cost extension, extending the A-PLUS Project until August 31, 2009.  The purpose for the extension was to continue support for those students working toward completion of the MLS degree.  DISD chose to use a portion of their remaining funds to support  this year's candidates in their certification program.

About the A-PLUS Project

The goals of the A-PLUS project are two-fold:

  1. To improve the accessibility and quality of library services for a diverse student population in the Dallas Independent School District ( DISD)
  2. To extend the education of newly certified librarians through completion of their professional degrees

Although state rules do not require a university partner, DISD chose to develop its program in partnership with Texas Woman's University's School of Library and Information Studies.

Fifty one (51) students will complete the alternative district-based School Librarian certification program with practical, mentored experience, and many of them will complete all requirements for the Texas Woman's University Master's in Library Science (MLS) Degree.

This project has had a powerful and enduring impact on individuals attracted to librarianship from underrepresented communities, and, most importantly, on the children they serve in the Dallas Independent School District.
