Using Blogs to Document Out-of-Sync Community Experiences

Individual blogs were set up for tracking progress in community-based fieldwork experiences of occupational therapy students in a distance learning cohort. Students set goals and strategies for each visit, and then reflected on progress after each visit. The instructor provided feedback along the way by commenting and prompting further reflection.

Digital Advocacy Stories: A Pedagogical Tool for Communicating and Strengthening Library Values (Poster Presentation)

This case study, conducted in LS5633: The Art of Storytelling, investigated students’ development of library values through creating and disseminating digital advocacy stories. While discussing, creating, sharing, revising, and reflecting on their stories, students strengthened their values and increased their expertise in communicating via social media and Web 2.0 tools.

Co-teaching, Co-learning: Multidisciplinary Literacy and Language Coaching and Collaboration in Communication Sciences

Deaf Education and SLP graduate students coached new graduate students during their final summer semester at TWU. Working with a new cohort of students in the TWU clinic for students who are deaf and hard of hearing, they provided co-teaching, modeling, and focused reflections using technologies including videotaped sessions and interaction on Blackboard.

Conversations in Socrates Cafe: Scaffolding Critical Thinking Instruction in the College Classroom

Critical thinking is a common goal in higher education. Instructors hope their students will apply critical analysis in their own thinking and that of their peers in face-to-face, hybrid, and online classroom formats. Frameworks such as the nine Intellectual Standards (Elder & Paul, 2007), inclusive of Socratic questioning, may be used to scaffold critical thinking instruction. FERPA – What you need to know

Learning in Real Time

In my classes, students are required to apply their knowledge to real world situations. These students work with clients from small businesses and non-profit agencies in the DFW area. Using Tegrity Lecture Capture in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry

The problem: Faculty in the department presenting the same lecture to 18 different sections of laboratory classes each week. The solution: Pre-record the lecture. We are using Tegrity lecture capture to pre-record and to record live classes, enabling students to review either parts or the entirety of classes.

Using Video as a Teaching Tool: Do I really do that?

Using video as a teaching tool in undergraduate courses to show students correct technique and what they are currently doing will be discussed. The presenter will discuss using video examples in the classroom and through Blackboard to teach proper technique. A class project, where students are required to video tape themselves instructing two individuals then evaluate their technique and professionalism along with assessing the individuals’ performance, will be used as an example.

This poster relies on the 3 phase spigot approach to synchronous pedagogy – drip, drizzle, and drench. This approach allows instructors to gradually add interactions and foster facilitation in a collaborate session.

The Online Practicum

Who’s Asking the Questions? Stimulating Online Discussions Through Different Types of Prompts

In a graduate-level seminar I began our weekly discussions in three different ways: through student-based, small-group-based, and instructor-based prompts.
